RISINGTIDE AKTIEVOERDERS LATEN STEM HOREN
"Lieve mensen van de media. Hieronder een aantal statements van de mensen die vandaag aandacht hebben gevraagd voor de slachtoffers van klimaat verandering. Neem ze zoals ze zijn en vergeet svp de verklaringen van hen die vooralsnog de macht in handen hebben"

DEN HAAG, 22 NOVEMBER 2000. Vandaag hebben aktievoerders hun stem tijdens de klimaatonderhandelingen laten horen. Op een voor officials onverklaarbare wijze zijn deze bezorgde wereldburgers het Nederlands Congres Gebouw binnengegaan en geven door middel van dit persbericht een aantal verklaringen in het Nederlands af.
NN01: "Het economische belang van het internationale bedrijfsleven heeft zoveel invloed dat de stem van mensen die moeten lijden aan klimaatverandering en milieuvervuiling nergens gehoord wordt. Wij hebben vandaag aktie gevoerd om aandacht voor deze slachtoffers te vragen."
NN02: "De klimaat conferentie gaat niet over hoe het versterkte broeikaseffect een halt toegeroepen kan worden, maar over hoe bedrijven en landen winst uit klimaatverandering kunnen halen. (…) Terwijl regeringen en het bedrijfsleven zich van de klimaat crisis naar economische winst onderhandelen, is het tijd voor mensen in aktie te komen."
NN03: "Praten met machthebbers is leuk, maar het belang aan een stabiel klimaat kan door hen niet in beleid omgezet worden. Wij hebben het conferentie centrum bezet omdat de aarde en haar bewoners voor ons belangrijker zijn dan het geld dat daaraan verdiend kan worden. Zij met politieke macht moet dat duidelijk gemaakt worden."
NN04: "Het streven naar economische winst moet stopgezet worden. In plaats van dat het belang aan economische groei de kern van al het politieke beleid vormt, zou het streven naar een rechtvaardige en duurzame samenleving voorop moeten staan"

MEETING DISTURBED!
AMERICAN DELEGATION LEADER PIED!
This afternoon we came together in the the conference
center in The Hague, where the sixth UN climate conference
is taking place. We managed to find our way to the 'high
level informal plenary meeting', where the delegation-
leaders were meeting to fill in the details for the trade
treaty on greenhouse gas markets they're actually
negotiating. After one and a half week, it's clear the
negotiations are going nowhere so it's time for a full stop.
It was incredible. We managed to somehow occupy the hall,
completely disturbing the meeting and take the UN security
and The Hague police completely by surprise, wow! They were
completely out of it, especially since the security was
chiefed by one person who completely panicked and couldn't
decide what to do, hurrah for hierarchy!
After some hassle we staid with some 20 people or so in the
room for an hour or two. In the main hall and outside,
other autonomous groups did banner drops saying 'climate
talk = money talk' and 'Carbon Trading - yes profit no
future.'
A bit later the American delegation tried to give a press
conference, but this was courteously disturbed by pieing
Frank Loyd, the delegation leader.
After some hours of chaos, the conference president and
Dutch environment minister Jan Pronk decided to invite us
to participate in the conference. We went in, explained why
the whole process was a carbon casino and a big sham and
that they could call us if they were ready to actually
negotiate on serious, 60% cuts focused on the people and
ecosystems suffering from climate change, instead of
profits. After that was made clear we left, leaving a
bewildered Pronk behind, saying "Don't you want to hear our
reply, don't you want to talk with us?".
Everything was incredibly powerful, but completely
bizarre... We just walked out and noone got arrested, with
5000 riot cops outside. Incredible.
In the meanwhile, the conference is announced to be
prolonged by a day (up 'till saturday) since negotiations
are going nowhere even without us. Definitely come here for
more action! (Convergence Center @ Rembrandstraat 70, tram
2 from Central Station, stop at Westeinde Ziekenhuis).
Other actions that happened today were an antinuclear demo,
which ended with a mass arest of almost 150 people, most of
which are still imprisoned. There were actions today around
the finnish embassy which is supporting nuclear technology
in th 'clean development mechanism' and making plans for a
new nuke plant), but I haven't heard much about that yet.
Earlier people disturbed a meeting of the Intern. Emissions
Trading Association, an evil lobby group, a dinner at the
ministry of environment and more like that. One person is
now facing more serious charges, Tomorrow there'll be
a 'Degree Zero' political art festival promising a load of
fun.
