The Russell Tribunal on Palestine condemns Israel's illegal 
detention and deportation of one of its coordinator, Frank Barat.

On Wednesday 24th of April at 1.20am, Frank Barat, following a 4 
hours interrogation by the Shabak (Israel's internal secret service) 
and a 23 hours detention at Givon prison in Ben Gurion airport, was 
deported back to Belgium.
Mr Barat was visiting Israel/Palestine on a personal capacity but 
also had to attend an important event on Palestinian political 
prisoners in Ramallah at the occasion of the 11th anniversary of the 
arrest of Palestinian Political leader Marwan Barghouti.

The Tribunal is convinced that Frank's deportation was solely due to 
his involvement in the Russell Tribunal on Palestine and in his work 
in solidarity with the Palestinian People. This type of behavior by 
the State of Israel, which is becoming more and more common, is not 
the one of a so called democratic State and reinforce the Tribunal's 
view that Israel has truly become an apartheid State. Unless Israel, 
as stipulated in the findings of the Tribunal, respect International 
Law and put  an end to this system, this country will become more 
and more ostracized every day.

The Tribunal therefore reaffirms the importance of worldwide 
solidarity with the Palestinian People until they achieve their 
right to self determination. Justice, Equality and Freedom for the 
palestinians should be the basis and prime condition for any just 
peace in the region.
