Dear Sir/Madam:

The Belgian national SCOPE committee will organise a seminar on
'Sustainable Urban Development and Neighbourhoods in Crisis' on 29 October
1999 in Brussels, in collaboration with the British Council, the Human Ecology
Dept. of Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Faculté des Sciences Agronomiques, Gembloux.

The seminar will bring together academics and practitioners from Belgium and
neighbouring countries to look into scenarios to develop deprived urban areas
in a more sustainable way.

The seminar will include 15 contributions from Belgian and British
speakers, dealing with ecological, social, health, economic, community,
physical, planning and measurement aspects of sustainable urban
development. Papers will focus in particular on deprived urban areas.
Papers will be delivered in either English, French or Dutch, without
simultaneous translation. Interaction between the speakers and the audience
will be encouraged through frequent discussion moments.
