[Duurzaamlijst] Fwd: uitnodiging voor Groene conferentie over MAI/WTO

-------- Doorgestuurd bericht --------

From: Richard Wouters <quansuys@xs4all.nl>

The Green Group in the European Parliament has the pleasure to invite you to
an international conference :
FROM THE MAI TO THE MILLENIUM ROUND; SETTING A DIFFERENT AGENDA FOR
FRAMEWORKS ON INVESTMENT AND TRADE
in Brussels, from April 27 till 28, 1999 in European Parliament , room 1G2

The globalisation process is continually increasing social inequality,
environmental damage and economic insecurity. One financial crisis is
chasing the next one. Nevertheless, this year, new economic liberalisation
projects are being set in motion.

The Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI), intended as the biggest coup
to be concluded last year, was definitely given up by the OECD in December
1998. The broad resistance by grassroots groups, trade unions, NGOs,
citizens and politicians worldwide has been a major factor in that decision.

On the basis of that victory, this International Conference in the European
Parliament will bring together people opposing further economic and
financial deregulation and seeking alternatives, which ensure higher
standards of living for the world*s peoples. It will focus on the tentacles
of the MAI, on the preparations of the WTO Millennium Round and on the refom
of Lomi, in order to elaborate alternative proposals. It is high time to
resist His Excellency the Market and rights for investors instead of
obligations.

With the participation of
Paul Lannoye (Green MEP, Belgium), Martin Khor (Third World Network,
Malaysia),Tewolde G. (Institute for Sustainable Development, Ethiopia), Lori
Wallach (Public Citizen, USA), Inger Schvrling (Green MEP, Sweden),Wangari

taxe Tobin, France), Philippe Herzog (UEL MEP, France), Myriam Vander
Stichele (SOMO, Amsterdam), Sarah Ocran (Third World Network, Ghana), Colin
