actie: CATHOLIC WORKER AMSTERDAM, FRANCISCAANSE VREDESWACHT,
HAAGS VREDES PLATFORM, KERK EN VREDE, TIME TO TURN, VROUWEN
VOOR VREDE.

Re: nuclear safety: no new nuclear weapons and nuclear
disarmament

24 March 2014

Honorable Ladies and Gentleman,

It is a hopeful pleasure to us that as rulers of the world
you are concerned about nuclear safety. We share your concern
for global nuclear safety. Perhaps you would agree with us
that nuclear terrorism seems a mere splinter compared to the
beam of the thousands of nuclear weapons on hair trigger
alert in the worldwide arsenals? Many nations currently
present at the NSS pledged in the Non Proliferation Treaty to
create the conditions for a halt to the production of nuclear
weapons, and to work for general and complete disarmament
that liquidates, in particular, nuclear weapons and their
delivery vehicles from national arsenals. But some of those
same nations present at the NSS have advanced plans to
produce and deploy a new generation of nuclear weapons! Let
us mention in particular the Russian, French, English, and
American governments and NATO countries like the Netherlands
if they would accept these new nuclear weapons on their soil
and demand their pilots to be ready to drop them on targets
when ordered.

As you are gathered to discuss nuclear safety in the world,
we want to urge you to abstain from a new generation of
nuclear weapons. And please do remember your common
commitment to nuclear disarmament under the aforementioned
treaty and unite your capacities to create real, verifiable,
worldwide and complete nuclear disarmament.

On behalf of those subject to your rule and the future
generations on this planet, we thank you for your efforts for
nuclear safety.
