Government closes university

Belgrade, Thursday -- Teaching in all Belgrade University faculties will end tomorrow by order of the Serbian Minister of Education, Jevrem Janjic, Beta news agency reports today. In a note marked "urgent" to all deans and the university rector, the minister announced that no gatherings or demonstrations were permitted in the faculties, emphasising that faculty heads would be responsible if the orders were not carried out.

The Association of Professors and Researchers of Serbia and The University Board for Democracy Defence appealed to the Rector of Belgrade University, professor Dr Jagos Puric to resign. The letter, given to FoNet says: "After your students have been beaten several times, we your colleagues, warn you, Jagos Puric, that you have betrayed all human principles. It is irrelevant whether you gave the orders, paid the bullies or just silently agreed, as rector you are responsible for everything that has been happening at the University. Thus we appeal publicly to you to resign from your position. We all know that you were appointed against the will of the majority of students and professors of the Belgrade University"
